Tempranillo 2008
The Bodega Del Sur 2008 Tempranillo from the “Cave City Vineyard” in Calaveras County is a great example of Sierra Foothill grown Tempranillo from California. This noble variety is a recent revelation in the arid climate of the mountain foothills of Northern California. In the mid 90’s a few people planted this obscure grape from Spain in selected vineyards in California. The warm days with very cool evenings are very similar to Rioja in Spain where Tempranillo is widely cultivated. The wines produced from Calaveras County in particular exhibit the classic blueberry/leather and tobacco character so well known in Rioja. This wine was fermented in a small vat and pumped over twice a day during fermentation. After the wine was done fermenting the must was allowed to soak for an extended maceration for 5 days then pressed to a small tank and settled for two weeks before gently racking to barrels for aging for 18 months prior to bottling on July 29th 2010.
